Newsmaker: Stephen M. Ross

Last month the Related Companies founder and chairman gave $30.5 million to the World Resources Institute (WRI), where he serves on the board of directors. Ross’s gift, the largest in WRI’s history, specifically bolsters the Washington, D.C.-based environmental nonprofit’s urban design efforts in the developing world. Ross spoke with RECORD about his donation and the accompanying launch of the WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities.

Newsmaker: Eric Cesal

Eric Cesal is the new executive director of Architecture for Humanity (AFH), the nonprofit’s board of directors announced today. A longtime volunteer, Cesal joined AFH full-time in 2010 to start the Haiti Rebuilding Center in Port-au-Prince. Since 2012 he has led the organization’s global post-disaster rebuilding efforts from its headquarters in San Francisco. Cesal replaces founding executive director Cameron Sinclair, who, with cofounder Kate Stohr, announced their resignation last fall.

International Living Future Institute Widens Its Reach Beyond Buildings

Buoyed by the progress of its performance-based Living Building Challenge green-building certification program, the International Living Future Institute is casting a net beyond the LBC. ILFI, through the umbrella Living Future Challenge announced recently, says it is developing even more ways to rethink “the way humanity designs its systems, products, buildings and communities.”
